Grand Bahama is the northernmost of the major Bahamian islands and one of the easiest to reach from our Florida bases. Freeport grew up as a duty-free port. Outside town the island is mostly beach and pine forest, with very few people on it.
We land at Grand Bahama International (FPO), minutes from Port Lucaya and the beaches along the island's south shore. It is a port of entry, so customs and immigration are handled on arrival. Wheels down to a waterfront lunch is usually under an hour.

What to do in Freeport
Lucayan National Park
Forty acres protecting one of the longest known underwater cave systems in the world, plus boardwalk trails through mangroves that end at Gold Rock Beach, the one that turns up on most Bahamas postcards.
Port Lucaya Marketplace
The island's waterfront hub: straw market stalls, conch shacks, duty-free jewelers, and live music on the square most evenings, all wrapped around a marina.
Diving with UNEXSO
Grand Bahama's famous dive operation has been running reef, wreck, and dolphin dives since the 1960s. Clear water and short boat rides make this a good island to learn on.
West End fishing
The historic fishing settlement at the island's western tip sits on the edge of deep water, with yellowfin, mahi and wahoo offshore and flats fishing inside the reef.

How long is the flight to Freeport?

How close is the airport to Port Lucaya and the beaches?
Grand Bahama International (FPO) is about a fifteen-minute taxi from Port Lucaya Marketplace and the south-shore beaches. It is one of the shortest airport-to-beach transfers in the Bahamas.
Do I clear customs in Freeport?
Yes, FPO is a Bahamian port of entry with customs and immigration on the field. The standard Bahamas customs processing fee is $150 one-way or $300 round-trip per flight, and U.S. citizens need a valid passport.
Is Freeport good for a day trip?
Very. Leave any of our Florida bases in the morning and you can be on Gold Rock Beach before noon and home for dinner. There's no charge for the pilot's wait time on a day trip.
