Governor's Harbour sits at the waist of Eleuthera, an island that runs a hundred miles north to south and is rarely more than a mile or two wide. From town you can be on an empty Atlantic beach or a calm bank-side one in a few minutes, in opposite directions.
The airport (GHB) is a port of entry and sits just north of town. Most of Eleuthera's rental houses are within half an hour of it, which is why it tends to be the right field for anyone staying on the island rather than crossing to Harbour Island.

What to do in Governor's Harbour
French Leave Beach
A long pink-tinged stretch on the Atlantic side, usually with nobody on it. It is a two-minute drive from the middle of town.
Friday night fish fry
At Anchor Bay, and it is the social event of the week on this part of the island. Grilled snapper, conch, and most of Governor's Harbour turning up.
The Levy Native Plant Preserve
Twenty-five acres of restored Bahamian coppice and wetland with marked trails, run as a conservation and education site just outside town.
Ocean Hole and the coves
An inland blue hole at Rock Sound to the south, and a run of small coves along the coast north of town that mostly have no names and no people.

About an hour and fifteen minutes by road to the North Eleuthera ferry dock, plus the water taxi. If Harbour Island is your destination, fly to North Eleuthera (ELH) instead and save the drive.
Is a rental car necessary?
On Eleuthera, yes. The island is long and thin and the good beaches are spread along it. Arrange a car in advance, since the supply is limited outside peak season.
Do we clear customs at Governor's Harbour?
Yes, GHB is a Bahamian port of entry. The customs processing fee is $150 one-way or $300 round-trip per flight, and all passengers need a valid passport.
