Great Harbour Cay is the biggest of the Berry Islands and the one with an actual settlement, Bullocks Harbour, where most of the chain's few hundred residents live. It was developed as a resort in the 1960s, the golf course went back to bush, and what is left is a marina, a handful of rental houses, and a beach that runs the length of the island's east side.
We land at Great Harbour Cay Airport (GHC), a port of entry with customs on the field. The marina is a few minutes away by golf cart, and the beach is on the other side of the road from most of the houses. It is one of the shortest out-island flights we fly, which makes it an easy day trip.

What to do in Great Harbour Cay
The beach
Great Harbour Beach runs about seven miles along the Atlantic side, shallow and calm inside the reef. Even in season you can walk a long way without passing anyone.
Sugar Beach caves
At the north end the limestone has eroded into low caves and arches that open onto the sand. Easy to reach on foot at low tide.
Shark Creek and the flats
A tidal creek on the bank side full of bonefish, small sharks and rays. Kayaks and guides are available through the marina.
Offshore fishing
The Northwest Providence Channel is a short run from the marina, with mahi, wahoo and tuna through the winter and spring.

How long is the flight to Great Harbour Cay?

How long is the flight from Florida?
Around an hour and ten minutes in the Grand Caravan from Fort Pierce, and a little longer from Merritt Island. Great Harbour is only slightly farther than Bimini.
Is there customs at Great Harbour Cay?
Yes. GHC is a Bahamian port of entry, and we clear customs and immigration on arrival. Standard Bahamas processing is $150 one-way or $300 round-trip per flight, and every passenger needs a valid passport.
Is there anywhere to stay and eat?
A few rental houses and villas around the marina and the beach, and a couple of restaurants that keep island hours. It is a self-catering sort of place, so plan on bringing some provisions and confirm restaurant days before you go.
