Long Island is one of the southern islands, roughly eighty miles long and usually no more than four wide. The Atlantic side is cliffs and coves; the bank side is shallow water and flats. The Tropic of Cancer runs across the middle of it. There are two airports, Stella Maris in the north and Deadman's Cay in the middle, and where you land depends on where you are staying.
Both airports are ports of entry with customs on the field. Most visitors stay near Stella Maris or at Cape Santa Maria in the north, or head south toward Clarence Town for the blue hole. The Queen's Highway runs the length of the island, and driving from one end to the other takes about two hours.

What to do in Long Island
Dean's Blue Hole
Just outside Clarence Town, a blue hole that drops more than 600 feet from a beach you can wade off. The deepest known in the Bahamas and the site of international freediving competitions. Snorkelling the rim takes ten minutes; the drop-off below it is what people come for.
Cape Santa Maria
The beach at the island's northern tip, a long curve of very white sand and shallow, very clear water. Regularly listed among the best beaches in the country, with a small resort on it.
Clarence Town
The island's capital, a small harbour town with two hilltop churches built by Father Jerome, the architect-priest who also built the Hermitage on Cat Island.
Fishing
Bonefish on the bank-side flats, and deep water on the Atlantic side close to shore. Stella Maris has a marina and guides working out of it.

How long is the flight to Long Island?

Which airport should we use?
Stella Maris (SML) for the north end and Cape Santa Maria, Deadman's Cay (LGI) for the middle of the island and Clarence Town. Tell your coordinator where you are staying and we will route you to the closer one.
How long is the flight from Fort Pierce?
About two and a quarter hours in the Grand Caravan to Stella Maris. It is one of the longer Bahamas legs we fly, so an overnight or a few days makes more sense than a day trip.
Do we clear customs on Long Island?
Yes, both airports are Bahamian ports of entry. Processing is $150 one-way or $300 round-trip per flight, and passengers need a valid passport and return ticket.
