Eleuthera is a hundred miles long, and the airport you use decides which part of it you see. North Eleuthera is for Harbour Island and the pink sand. Rock Sound, at the southern end, is for the rest: Tarpum Bay, Cape Eleuthera, and a string of settlements along the Queen's Highway where visitors are still a bit of a novelty.
We land at Rock Sound International (RSD), a port of entry with customs on the field, right beside the settlement. From here Tarpum Bay is fifteen minutes north and Cape Eleuthera about half an hour south. Governor's Harbour and the middle of the island are under an hour by car.

What to do in South Eleuthera
Ocean Hole
An inland blue hole in the middle of Rock Sound settlement, ringed with rock ledges and connected to the sea somewhere underground. Tame snapper and grouper come up to be fed.
Cape Eleuthera
A resort and marina at the island's southwest tip, with deep water off the point and the Island School's research campus next door. The base for fishing and boating trips at this end of the island.
Tarpum Bay
A small waterfront settlement with a long, shallow bay, a few artists' studios and one of the prettiest main streets on the island.
The beaches
Winding Bay, Cotton Bay and a dozen unnamed coves on the Atlantic side. Most are reached down sand tracks off the highway, and most are empty.

How long is the flight to South Eleuthera?

Rock Sound or North Eleuthera?
North Eleuthera (ELH) if you are going to Harbour Island or Spanish Wells. Rock Sound (RSD) for anywhere south of Governor's Harbour. The drive between the two airports is about two hours, so landing at the right end matters.
How long is the flight from Florida?
About an hour and forty-five minutes in the Grand Caravan from Fort Pierce. Long enough that an overnight is the usual plan, though a day trip is workable with an early start.
Do we clear customs at Rock Sound?
Yes, RSD is a Bahamian port of entry with customs and immigration on the field. Processing is $150 one-way or $300 round-trip per flight, and every passenger needs a valid passport.
